Information on the case from local sources, may or may not be correct : Jed was last seen at his residence in Idaho Falls, Idaho on January 22, 2018. He left sometime around 2:00 a.m., driving a gray 2009 Nissan Versa hatchback with the Idaho license plate number 8B EF732, taking camping and survival gear and a 9mm handgun. He left a note behind at home, indicating he planned to take his own life. His parents realized he was missing at 6:51 a.m.
Jed did leave a journal lying in the snow near where the Versa had previously been parked; it had a detailed list of items he planned to take with him, as well as several disguise plans. He enjoyed the reality TV show "Hunted", where teams of two people would attempt to avoid being found by investigators for four weeks.
After she found out Jed was missing, his mother went to his school, American HeritAge at the time of disappearance: Charter School, to look for him and noticed a window there had been broken. She called the police, who viewed the school's security camera footAge at the time of disappearance: and determined Jed had broken the window shortly before 2:30 a.m. and used it to gain entry to the school. He left a note, cash and a necklace in a friend's locker before driving away in the Versa.
Jed's cellular phone was continuously pinged after his parents reported his disappearance, but at 6:48 a.m. that day the phone was either turned off or the battery died. The last pinged location placed the phone .43 miles southeast of the Verizon phone tower in the 1400 block of Lindsey Boulevard. A river is nearby that area, as well as access points for Highway 20 and Interstate 15.
Thorough searches turned up no indication of Jed or the car. A photo of a 2009 Nissan Versa is posted with this case summary; it has not been located. The driver's side rear hubcap on the car is missing.
Authorities do not know whether Jed followed through on his plan to die by suicide, or if he is still alive; the bodies of people who take their own lives are usually found quickly. Jed's father stated he was a straight-A student and an experienced camper. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and planned to join the military after high school. His case remains unsolved.
