Her husband dropped her off at the depot to allow Hughes to catch a bus to Louisiana so she could visit relatives. Her husband said Hughes was crying, upset and irrational when he last saw her. She never arrived in Louisiana and has never been heard from again. Her mother reported her missing on December 19. Hughes resided in Magnolia, Texas in 1986. She is missing under suspicious circumstances and police suspect she was taken against her will.
